Security Prison To Go Ahead Quickly
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 5. The construction of the maximum security prison at Paremoremo would be pushed ahead at maximum speed with all the resources available, the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) reiterated in Parliament today.
The Ministry of Works had neither the building organisation nor the plant to take up work of this magnitude, he said, but private enterprise was willing and able to undertake the assignment. Mr Allen was replying to a question from Mr R. L. Bailey (Opp., Heretaunga) who asked if mobilising of Ministry of Works forces would be considered to construct the prison.
In a supplementary question, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition (Mr Watt) asked if the ministry organisation would be the consulting authority. Mr Allen: Most definitely. Mr M. Moohan (Opp., Petone) asked the Minister if he would consider bringing the prison down to “something reasonable” and not the £2 million or £3 million envisaged. Mr Allen said this question was one for the Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) and it was being considered at present. Opposition voice: Another delay.
