LEADER OF ORCHESTRA
Chch Violinist Chosen Again Robin Perks, a Christchurch violinist, has been chosen as leader of the National Youth Orchestra for the second year in succession. Now 21 and a full member of the N.Z.B.C. Symphony’s violin section, Robin Perks is one of the youth orchestra’s most experienced players, being one of the 1959 foundation members. Robin began playing the violin when he was nine, and studied music at the University of Canterbury. He became an N.Z.B.C. orchestral trainee at the beginning of 1964. Last year he played with the N.Z.B.C. Concert Orchestra and his chamber music experience has included membership of a quartet that presented a work by John Ritchie in an Auckland Festival concert of New Zealand music this year. The Perks family is also represented in the 1965 national youth orchestra by Robin’s younger sister, Wendy, who has been selected as a reserve in the ’cello section. Conducted by Ashley Heenan, the orchestra of more than 100 young musicians will present two public concerts in Lower Hutt and Wellington.
