Took Bets While On Bail
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 5. Arrested for bookmaking on July 30, and bailed out, Michael John Reardon, aged 22, a part-time barman, was arrested again the next day on a similar charge, the police told Mr M. B. Scully, S.M. Reardon pleaded guilty and was convicted of the first charge earlier in the week. He was then remanded for sentence. Today he pleaded guilty to the second charge. He was convicted on this count also and fined a total of £750, costs £3. The Magistrate said that although there were two
charges, he would be treated as a first offender. “The summary given to me by the police leads me to believe that this man was one of the big fish to come into the net,” said the Magistrate. “Bets have been shown in the region of £5700 or more over five days and even if this were not based only on commissions, it shows that he was a bookmaker in a large way. “Notwithstanding that, there must be a substantial penalty. You are convicted and fined £250, for the first offence,” he said. Of the second offence, for which he imnosed a fine of £5OO, the Magistrate said: “You left the Court on Friday on bail and to continue your illegal activities on Saturday is nothing but an arrogant
contempt of the law. I see no reason why on this offence you should not receive the maximum fine.”
