‘Unscrupulous Young Woman’ Blamed
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, August 5. An “unscrupulous young woman” led a man into a series of false pretences, the Magistrate's Court was told today when the man appeared for sentence. Noel Stanley Robertson, aged 32, a salesman, of Lower Hutt, had previously pleaded guilty to 13 charges of false pretences, one of obtaining credit by fraud, and one of obtaining credit by false pretences. Mr R. D. Jamieson, S.M., convicted him on all charges ,and sentenced him to three years’ gaol on five charges to be served concurrently. On a further eight charges he was sentenced to nine months’ gaol and convicted and discharged on the remaining two. The Magistrate told Robertson he was eligible for a period of preventive detention. Robertson made a great success off a job he took after his last release from gaol, Mr N. G. Gallate, counsel for the defence said. “He was intensely interested in his work and seemed to have found his place in society. “Later this year he met an unscrupulous young woman. He supported her and lavished money on her. Then she told him he was the father of her expectant child and demanded more money. He stood by her. The woman demanded a car and other extras beyond his means.” Robertson's activities were
a result of the woman’s demands, Mr Gallate said. In June, Robertson discovered the woman was equally involved with two other men.
Mr Gallate said he un4erstood the woman was not pregnant.
