More Violence In Sudan Feared

KHARTOUM, August 5. Sudan Government forces are today tensed for action after the expiry of a two-week ultimatum to Southern rebels to hand in their arms.
The separatist Negro rebels have largely ignored the deadline, which ended at midnight last night, and the Government, with a new plan ready to disarm them, has rushed reinforcements to the Southern border areas. Yesterday the Cabinet met into the night awaiting last-
minute reports from the South as the deadline expired. As they waited, an Army spokesman announced that about 70 northern soldiers, feared trapped by rebels in the Turumba district of Equatoria Province, had regained communication with Army headquarters at Juba.

During the ultimatum period few Southerners responded to Government offers of amnesty, money and protection in return for arms, and about 80 rebels were reported killed. Modern arms and uniformed rebel soldiers were captured in raids on training camps, the Government announced. Administration and welfare services in the Southern provinces are paralysed, though the Government has appealed to northern doctors and nurses who fled north to return under Army protection.
