There were only 800 doctors in South Vietnam, and 500 of them were in the armed 'orces, a United States Public Health Service official, Dr. John Reed, told a Congressional hearing. Of the remainder, Dr. Reed said, 150 would treat only paying patients, leaving 150 to treat all others. He said that the United States Public Health Service had established surgical units, and other help had arrived from South Korea, Formosa, Japan, Italy, Australia and the Philippines.
