POSITION DEFINED

No Japanese Involvement (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright? TOKYO, August 5. Japan's Prime Minister (Mr Eisaku Sato) declared today that his Government would not “co-oper-ate actively” with the United States in the Vietnam war. And it would not involve Japan in the conflict, he said. Mr Sato made the statement at the Lower House Budget Committee in reply to an Opposition questioner, who demanded the Government declare it would not co-operate in "war acts” in Vietnam. The Prime Minister said: “The Government hopes for an early end of the conflict, but it is inadequate to totally deny United States action in Vietnam. “The Government will resolutely eliminate the danger of being involved in a war or any event which will affect the fate of our country.”
