Coal
Sir, —I beg to differ from Mr Arthur Lush’s statement that supplies of coal are limited. Most people in Buller know that coal deposits have only been scratched. 1 personally know of three seams of first-class bituminous coal which have never been bored. One seam, showing 60ft at the outcrop, runs straight into the side of a mountain and most certainly is miles in extent. Under the Mines Department set-up a private person cannot get a licence to work these deposits in opposition to the State mines. As regards leaving the coal in the ground for the next 20 or 30 years, what are the miners in Buller and the people of the depressed area of Westport supposed to do in the meantime? Stagnate? Surely a reasonable agreement can be worked out with Japan, profitable to both parties.— Yours, etc., V.M. August 3, 1965.
