Horticultural Society Seeks More Members

An increase of 84 during the year had brought the present membership to 2108, said the president (Mr H. G, Gilpin) in his report presented to the annual meeting of the Canterbury Horticultural Society. Mr Gilpin acknowledged that this increase was gratifying but said that Christchurch, the “garden city.” should be able to support a membership 10 times that size. An estimated 30,000 persons had attended the society’s summer exhibition in Hagley Park and five shows had been held during the year. While the entries were always of a high standard, their numbers was still disappointing, said Mr Gilpin. Entries for the home and factory garden competitions were still, disappointing. A new class would be introduced this year for institutions such as hospitals and schools, and it was hoped that this would arouse more interest, he said. The meeting agreed that a drive for new members was important and a tentative suggestion was made to raise the subscription to increase revenue. It was agreed to leave the new committee the task of investigating means of increasing revenue. Members supported a suggestion that the society’s magazine, “The City Beautiful,” could make better use of its space. At present it was not really a local magazine and far too much space was devoted to garden clubs. In future more space should be given to descriptions of local gardens and local personalities.
