Ny’s Opponent Beaten

(By Our Boxing Reporter.) Sammy Rush, the sixth-ranked Australian professional bantamweight, who is to fight Laurie Ny, of Christchurch, at Canterbury Court on Thursday evening, was beaten in Sydney this week. Rush (Bst 51b) was outpointed by Arthur Jowett (Bst 121 b) over six rounds at the Sydney Stadium. In the feature bout of the bill, Max Murphy outpointed the Australian featherweight champion, Johnny Famechon, in a 12-round nontitle bout. Dion Murphy, the retired New Zealand lightweight champion, has beaten both Murphy and Famechon. Evidence that boxing in Australia is in the doldrums was the size of the crowd at the Sydney Stadium for the Famechon-Murphy fight—soo. Allan Roberts, the Sydney welter-weight who is to fight Brian Maunsell on Thursday night, has an up-and-down record. He was knocked out twice in his last two appearances in New Zealand, in 1963. He lasted only five rounds on both occasions, against Johnny Grady and Sam Leuii. At Brisbane, in September last year, Roberts was knocked out by Paul Baker in the ninth round of a 12-

round bout. On October 26 last year, a bout between Roberts and Dick Blair was declared “no contest” in the fifth round. Five days later, Roberts drew with R. Beekin in a 10round bout at Canberra. Roberts’s record early this year improved. He knocked out Roy Atkinson in the sec-

ond round on February 20; outpointed Arthur Larrigo over 10 rounds on March 13; and knocked out George Carroll in the ninth round, on March 27.

Rush has a poor record, having been twice knocked out by Gilbert King, whom Laurie Ny beat without even breaking into a sweat.
