Cracked By Heat

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 21. The intense heat of the fires at Auckland prison may have affected the soundness of the building’s heavy masonry walls. There were some signs that the stonework had expanded in the heat, causing cracking of the joints between the stones, said the Ministry of Works district architect, Mr G. Dawson, today. Mr Dawson accompanied the District Commissioner of Works, Mr I. W. McKinnon, on a preliminary inspection of the prison in the morning. “Until we can see the rest of the prison—the basement section was under three to four feet of water—we won’t be able to make a full assessment of the damage,” said Mr Dawson.
