UNIONS AT WEST ARM
Labourers Ready When the new £lsm underground power-house contract began at West Arm, Manapouri, in September, the General Labourers’ Union would be there to take over its members, said the secretary of the CanterburyOtago General Labourers' Union (Mr L. B. Swan) yesterday. More than 600 workers, including tunnellers and labourers, are expected to be employed on the job. Mr Swan said that unless the Utah Mining Company of San Francisco, as the successful tenderer, applied for exemption of existing awards soon, the job would automatically go to the respective unions involved to cover their own members. When the president of the New Zealand Workers’ Union (Mr W. A. Dempster) was asked what union or unions would be covering the job he said: "I have been sworn to secrecy.” Mr Dempster said that several unions were playing this particular issue “close to the chest.” He thought the job coverage would provide considerable interest in industrial circles.
