Alcoholism
Sir, —I am an alcoholic. “Not Teetotal” desires to take the gloves off and toss alcoholics from hospitals and such institutions, deny them social security, as well as tax exorbitantly beer and spirits. Would this saviour toss diabetics and other sick people on to the scrap-heap with the alcoholics? I am very grateful for a democracy that will not tolerate such action. Like others, I have paid my due taxes, as well as rearing a large family, of which I am very proud. Having become afflicted with a disease known as alcoholism, 1 expect privileges which are extended to other sick people. As with all sick people, alcoholics wish to recover from this illness. The medicine prescribed by “Not Teetotal” is nasty. I am confident members of the medical profession will not agree to the prescription.—Yours, etc., BLUEY. July 20, 1965.
