ENGINEERS SEE TOWNS
Flights Given For Service (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) NHA TRANG, July 20. Members of New Zealand’s non-combatant engineering unit in Vietnam were taken on a 600-mile sightseeing trip by courtesy of the Vietnamese Mr Force today. The unit will return home tomorrow and a flight to the mountain town of Dalat and the coastal town of Nha Trang Was given in recognition of the unit’s sterling service under the civilian aid programme in Binh Duong province, north of Saigon. The unit has obviously made a tremendous: impression on the South Vietnamese, ft has been in the province for a year, building bridges, children’s playgrounds, constructing roads and housing and starting brick manufacturing works.
The sappers are known throughout the province—and much of the surrounding area—as the men from Tan Tay Lan, the translation for New Zealand. Because of this, the unit decided to have special shoulder flashes made of the Vietnamese wording. As a further means of strengthening the feeling of good will between New Zealand and South Vietnam, the sappers have taken the trouble to learn Vietnamese.
