COERCION CLAIMED

Land For Steel

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 14. Threats to take land under the Public Works Act for the steel mill at Glenbrook had been used to coerce farmers to accept a price for their land to which they were not agreeable, Mr R. C. Dunlop, vice-president of the Auckland provincial executive of Federated Farmers, said today. He said these threats to get control of land through the act were “quite unjustified.” The executive adopted a remit from the Franklin subprovince’s Mauku branch protesting at the threat of the use of the act to acquire land for a private enterprise. “When first approaches were made to the farmers concerned there was no suggestion of compulsion to sell the land,” said Mr Dunlop. “But as the negotiations for sale proceeded, valuers left the impression that the Public Works Act could be used to enforce sale,” he said.
