PIONEER HOUSES
Preservation At Burnham (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 14. As a result of a district survey by the North Canterbury regional committee of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust of pioneer houses of cob construction. “Burnham Grange,” near Burnham, has been declared a private historic reserve, the Minister of Lands (Mr Gerard) said today. Although not now occupied, the house was in reasonable condition and was capable of being mainlined as a fine example of a pioneer dwelling, the Minister said. Dwellings of that type were constructed of blocks made from a composition of clay, gravel and straw. “Burnham Grange" was unique in that it incorporated a herringbone pattern of joining in the cob blocks.
The New Zealand Historic Places Trust will control and manage the reserve.
