NEEDLESS POVERTY

Allowances Uncollected (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON. July 14. Many of Britain's old folk are living in needless poverty, says the Minister of Pensions (Miss Margaret Herbison). She is “deeply concerned" about old-age pensioners who do not claim National Assistance allowances to which they are entitled. Where an old-age pensioner’s income falls below certain standards, financial help would be given “as of right.” The 80-year-old secretary of the National Federation of Old-age Pensioners’ Associations, Mr E. Melling, said he estimated that between 250,000 and 500,000 pensioners did not claim National Assistance allowances to which they were entitled. Many still looked upon it as charity. “Becase of this, 20,000 die of exposure every winter and thousands more die of starvation.” he said.
