“The Press” In 1865

July 17 SPORTING JOURNALISTS.—The following extraordinary paragraph appears in the “New Zealander” of the 4th instant:—“A statement having been made in yesterday's ‘New Zealand Herald,’ as to the commercial position of the ‘New Zealander,' and such statement being libellous, the proprietors of the ‘New Zealander.* to save the expenses attendant upon any appeal to the Supreme Court, make the following offer to the proprietor of the ‘New Zealand Herald':—They offer (I)—A bet of £5O that the 'blew Zealander’ had, on July

1, 1865, a larger bona fide subscription list than the ‘New Zealand Herald.’ (2) —A bet of £5O that the net profit realised by the *New Zealander' for the quarter ended June 30, 1865, was greater than that realised by the ‘Herald* during the same period. The conditions: That the examiners of the accounts for the ‘Herald* be appointed by the ‘New Zealander,' and those for the ‘New Zealander’ by the ‘Herald’— the losing side to pay over the wager to the City Mission, the receipt of the money to be acknowledged by advertisement. Three days are allowed for the acceptance of this offer.”
