Threat To Wool Industry Seen
The national executive of Federated Farmers will be asked to investigate what hte vicechairman of the North Canterbury meat and wool section executive (Mr A. F. Wright) yesterday called the “unfair advantage” enjoyed by the recently.opened nylon factory in the North Island.
Referring to the televised opening of the factory, Mr Wright told the provincial executive that the factory manager had said production would be maintained 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “This is in direct competition with our product. They are getting an unfair advantage over our industry,” he said. Mr G. Van Asch (Halsweli) said there were plenty of New Zealand industries which worked seven days a week. “It would make a tremendous difference to the whole economy of the country if more industries did the same. I don’t think we should condemn them.” The chairman (Mr W. N. Dunlop) said the nylon industry was not an isolated case. A motion to ask the federation to make inquiries into the matter was passed. The executive decided to make inquiries into the availability of a suitable vaccine
should foot-and-mouth disease break out in New Zealand. Mr L. Taylor asked if vaccines had been produced for treating the disease, and if not, were they available in New Zealand. If the disease got into the country the means of dealing with it should be available. Mr Dunlop said a lot of plans had been made to cope with this eventuality. However, inquiries could be made to find out exactly what they were.
