Produce For Australia
(N.Z. Press Association)
HAMILTON, July 14. Hamilton airport could be a key collection point for airfreighting New Zealand produce overseas. Mr Graham Kerr, a food specialist, said today Hamilton could feature prominently in the air export of farm and market garden produce. He envisages Hamilton airport becoming one in a chain throughout the country through which fresh vegetables, fruit, sea foods and farm products could be sent overseas. The other major collection points would be Auckland, Wellington and Chirstchurch or Blenheim.
Mr Kerr envisages New Zealand becoming the “market garden” of Australia. He says fresh New Zealand produce will be flown
expanding population, greater quantities of produce would be consumed there.
“I cannot see the Bay of Plenty having such an economic and central collection point as Hamilton,” he said Mr Kerr said New Zealand could fly tomatoes into Sydney cheaper than they could be flown in from Perth. He said an international freight aircraft could make a “milk run” through New Zealand picking up produce for Australia. “It could bring such things as motor parts back.” he said.
