Lake Ellesmere

Sir,—J read with some interest the letter by “One of Them” dealing with the questionnaire sent out by the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society. The reply by the Catchment Board giving the acreage of the lake at one foot above mean sea level does not disclose the true facts of the matter. 1 would like to ask two questions of Mr Brough. What is the acreage covered by water when the lake is at Its present winter outlet level of 3.7 feet? What would be the reduction in acreage when the water level is reduced to the previously mentioned one foot above mean sea level? —Yours, etc., ELLESMERE SPORTSMAN. July 9, 1965. [The secretary of the North Canterbury Catchment Board (Mr W. W. Brough) replies: “The area at 3.7 ft above mean sea level is approximately 51,000 acres. At Ift it is approximately 39,000 acres.”]
