TRAINING IN FLYING

More Schools At Harewood?

Four schools to train pilots may soon be operating at Christchurch Airport. Two already exist, and two more may be established. The Canterbury Aero Club, Aero Sales, Ltd., and Airwork (N.Z.), Ltd., already have the approval of the Christchurch City Council to operate from the airport. An application by the Auckland Flying School will be considered by the council on Monday night. The co-director of the Auckland Flying School (Mr J. S. Bergman) said in Christchurch that he had hoped to begin training operations from the airport next Saturday, and had brought two Cessnas down. Yet after negotiations begun eight weeks ago with the airport authority he had not received permission to go ahead. Asked to comment on the Auckland move the president of the Canterbury Aero Club (Mr G. J. Williamson) said he had no comment to make until the couneil’s decision was known.

The flying training school planned by Airwork (N.Z.), Ltd., will be different from the others in that flying training for float-plane operations will be provided. Such training has never been provided in Christchurch. The company will soon decide whether it will go ahead with its project. This is understood to depend on the granting of an import licence. Aero Sales, Ltd., which operates from Paraparaumu and other North Island airports, was authorised last year to conduct a school in Christchurch. This it has done, but only on a very limited basis.
