Travelling Awards For Craftsmen
Eight overseas training awards, two to northern hemisphere countries, will be awarded this year by the Craftsman Training Foundation.
They will enable outstanding young craftsmen, aged between 21 and 25 on December 31, to work overseas for one to two years, and to undertake technical training there. News of the awards was received “with appreciation” by the board of managers of the Christchurch Technical Institute. “This is an excellent thing,” said Mr D. W. Lyall, the institute's principal. “It is what some of us have been trying to get for years.”
It was decided to write to the foundation expressing appreciation of the awards, and promising the institute’s full support. The awards for 1965 will be made in the following fields:— To the northern hemisphere: Toolmaking, electricity.
to Australia: Building construction (two awards), refrigeration engineering, radio engineering, television specialisation, lithographic printing, automotive engineering. Return fare, plus incidental expenses, will be paid by the foundation.
Employment with top-level firms is arranged beforehand by the foundation. While so employed, the award winners earn wages or a salary. “Sound technical knowledge and creditable work records are essential, together with a good standard of technical training," says the foundation. “As the award winners will be representatives of New Zealand while overseas, the personality of candidates, and their community and spare-time interests, will be considered by the selection committee.” Award winners must provide evidence of their physical fitness, and of their intention to return to New Zealand on completion of their visit.
