New Assistant Secretary Of Internal Affairs
Mr E. J. L. Fairway, who was recently appointed Assistant Secretary of Internal Affairs, has been a mem ber of the Public Service for 32 years.
Born in 1913, Mr Fairway was educated at Wellington College and graduated from Victoria University College with master of arts and bachelor of laws degrees. He
joined the Public Trust Office in 1933 and from there transferred to the Air Department. serving four years in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a flight lieutenant (special duties) before going to the Department of Agriculture. He joined the Internal Affairs Department as naturalisation officer, and more recently has been in charge of citizenship and cultural matters.
Mr Fairway was directly concerted with expansion work on citizenship, arising from post-war immigration to New Zealand, and seven years ago he represented New Zealand at a conference in Cuba on the cultural integration of aliens. The other side of his work has been connected with the arts. He was direct'y associated with the department's develooment programme and subsequent formation of the Arts Advisory Council and later the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council. Mr Fairway sits on the council as an observer.
