Oil Soils Riviera Beach

(N Z. Prett Attn.—Copyright) CANNES (France), July 13. Thousands of holidaymakers on this section of the Riviera were up in arms on Monday against the U.S. Sixth Fleet and the aircraft-carrier Shan-gri-la, which by a technical error emptied about 2600 gallons of oil in the Mediterranean just off the port of Cannes.

The oil, carried by wave

and wind, began lapping at the beaches shortly afterwards, and soon the sands were hastily deserted by crowds in swimming suits. Deluged by complaints Mayor Bernard Cornut-Gen-tille sent a police officer to the aircraft-carrier by small boat to register a protest to the American commander. He said the Americans promptly acknowledged their error and presented . their apologies. An American offi-

cer laid the Navy would do its best to protect the beaches. Several score of American sailors were quickly landed to dig a ditch about a yard deep along the shore to eatcb and drain off the oil. A Navy helicopter scattered a special chemical designed to disperse the oil.

Beach operators along the coast began totalling their estimated damages to present a bill to the Americans.
