Successful Cage Bird Show In Ashburton

An outstanding variety of birds, comprising canaries and budgerigars, British and foreign classes, was exhibited at the second annual show of the Ashburton Cage Bird Club which opened in the Ashburton Returned Services’ Association’s hall on Friday. There were 550 entries, from centres as far afield as Auckland and Invercargill. A junior exhibitor, Ngaire Streeter, of Timaru, showed the best bird in the budgerigar section, which was the strongest in the show with more than one-third of the total entries. Miss Streeter’s exhibit was a light green opaline male bird.

The general standard of exhibits throughout was high, although the border canary classes were considered to have slipped in standard apart from one or two good birds. Foreign bird entries were outstanding. A feature of the show was the section for new colour canaries, in which a strong entry of nearly 30 birds of striking red and apricot hues were exhibited. This species has been developed in the last 10 years by crossing canaries with Siskin finches from

South America to produce a copper hybrid.
