WEKAS AT RUGBY
‘Cruel Act’ IN Z Press Association) GISBORNE, July 4. “This was an ill-considered and cruel act, one which is absolutely deplored by the Poverty Bay Rugby Union," the president of the union Mr B. Wostenholme, said yesterday. He was commenting on the release of live wekas at Rugby Park prior to the start of the match between the Springboks and the combined team on Wednesday. Yesterday, the field officer of the Wildlife Division of the Department of Internal Affairs, Mr T. P. Fisher, deplored the release of the birds and said the trapping of the birds used was illegal. “The Poverty Bay Rugby Union is right behind Mr Fisher in any action he might see fit to take,” Mr Wostenholme said. “The union had no part in this action. It was obvious the birds were completely terrified by what was a shocking act of cruelty."
