Questions To Sportsmen
In its concern at “a scheme afoot” for a permanent outlet for Lake Ellesmere, the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society has issued a questionnaire to all sportsmen—anglers, : hooters, and boaters —who use the lake. It asks them how much money they have put into their equipment, the cost of their angling, shooting, or boating each season, and the time spent in pursuing their sport. “These questions are confidential, and will be treated as such,” says the questionnaire. “Sportsmen are probably aware that there is a scheme afoot to have a permanent outlet for Lake Ellesmere,” says a circular which accompanies the questionnaire. “Should this proposal materialise, it will certainly deprive you and your sons of your fishing, shooting, and boating heritage. “The best means of fighting this proposal is to produce facts and figures, showing to what exent the fishing, shooting and boating fraternity depends on this area for sport, bearing in mind that fish and game from this area are distributed throughout the whole of the Canterbury district,” the circular says.
