Cabaret Staff Refuse To Serve Supper
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, July 2.
There was confusion at the Majestic Cabaret, Wellington, last night when the staff of 10 stewards and one waitress refused to serve during the Dominion Motors Social Club ball.
The band stopped playing and the dancers sat at their tables waiting for their supper. But nothing was served. In the kitchen, the manager (Mr P. Dobson) was frantically organising the kitchen staff and even the band’s singer. Miss Maryse McDonald, to help serve savouries and coffee.
“This is great fun. I’ve never had to do this before,”
said Miss McDonald as she hurried out of the kitchen with a chicken-laden tray. Most of the guests did not realise the panic behind the scenes, but the few who did put but their cigarettes and joined in. “I’m not sure what has gone wrong.” said one girl, “but someone’s got to help out.” At 11.30 p.m., instead of taking supper to the tables, the head steward, Mr Ostler Lincoln, had told Mr Dobson his staff was not satisfied with working conditions. The stewards, including Mr Lincoln and the waitress, were dismissed on the spot.
