READING AGES

Improvement At School “I’d hate to say what the reading age of some of our pupils is,”, said Mr T. R Richards, principal of Christchurch West High School last evening. “You’d be amazed,” he told the school board. But there had been a great improvement in the reading age of some of the slower pupils. An experienced teacher who was in charge of the slow learners’ class had had his time-table so arranged that he could give assistance with backward read ers to other classes as well as his own. Mr Richards also referred to the teaching of grammar. He assured the board that due weight was given to the teaching of English grammar at Christchurch West.

“As a former teacher of English, Latin and French I know the value of sound grammar teaching,” said Mr Richards “We have never at this school been criticised for doing too little. The Pendlebury series which is in use in our English department lays stress on grammar.”
