UNIVERSITY VACANCIES THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED STUDIES DEPARTMENT OF FAR EASTERN HISTORY APPLICATIONS are invited for two posts in the Department of Far Eastern History, Research School of Pacific Studies (Head of Department: Professor C. P Fitz Gerald). Both appointments may be made at the level of either Research Fellow or Fellow, one in Japanese History and the other in Chinese History. Applicants should have a Ph.D. or its equivalent in research experience and publications in Japanese or Chinese History respectively. Duties will include the supervision of scholars working for the Ph.D The salary and range of a Fellow are determined within the limits £A2BIO-3SOO. Appointment is made for an initial period of five years; there after he may be re-appointed until retiring age. A Fellow is entitled to one year’s study leave on full pay, plus a con tnbution towards travel and other expenses, m every seven years of service. At present the maximum grant is £AIOBO. The School would be particularly interested in appli cations from historians of economics, social or political thought, but does not wish to exclude applicants interested in other areas within the history of ideas. The succesful candidate will probably be attached for administrative purposes to the Department of Philosophy. Should the special interests of the candidate make this desirable he may, however, join some other department of the School. The History of Ideas Unit already contains one Fellow, Dr. Eugene Kamenka. The successful applicant will be expected to pursue research with special emphasis on English manorial and ecclesiastical history, and, among other duties, to hold a summer school in palaeography and in other ways to foster the development of medieval studies in Australia.

Preference will be given to a candidate who is actively engaged in research in some part of the theory of Continu ous Groups, e.g. Topological Groups, Lie Groups, Algebraic Groups, Classical Groups, Re presentations of Groups. Abstract Harmonic Analysis, Transformation Groups, Geometrical Groups, Theory of Invariants. It is hoped that the successful candidate will be able to assist in the development of an Honours Programme with a strong group-theoretic bias, and In guiding post-graduate students in research in this field. It is the intention to use the Theory of Groups systematically as a unifying principle in the presentation of Mathematics in courses given at Bedford Park The salary for this post is £4300 per annum. Superannuation is on the F.S.S.U. pattern The University is developing a second campus at Bedford Park seven miles south of the centre of Adelaide, where teaching will begin in March, 1966. The academic work at Bedford Park will be organised in Schools of Language and Literature, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences and Biological Sciences, and will be under the control of the Bedford Park academic staff. Construction of new buildings to house the four academic schools, the Library and the Union, is well under way. The successful applicant should be able to take up duty in 1966, but the date will be arranged with him after ap pointment.
