GAOLED FOR TWO YEARS
Man Who Shot Niece <N Z. Press Association) ' WELLINGTON, June 4. A middle-aged pastrycook was sentenced in the Supreme Court today to two years’ gaol for wounding his 18-year-old niece with a shotgun with intent to cause grievous bodily harm He had earlier been found guilty by a jury of the charge. He is Ray Benjamin Hammington. aged 53. of Lower Hutt. He shot Judith Margaret Rogan, on November 18. Mr Justice Tompkins, passing sentence, said Hammingiton had come within an ace |of killing the girl. He had [Shot her twice, in the thigh and in the body, the second: itime while she was laying on l [the ground. He said the evidence ‘showed Hammington had intended to shoot the girl, be-! cause he could not bear the thought of her leaving his] household and having a boy-1 friend.
