Sheltered Workshop Needs Finance Now
“The need for our work isi evident and the indications are that it must grow to satisfy the growing need.” said the secretary (Miss C. E. Robinson) when she read the report at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Sheltered Workshop Association. Miss Robinson said that as
the work became better] known the workshop could expect more support from the community, but this support was urgently needed now. More full time staff would have to be arranged soon, but this meant the expenditure of money. There were 35 voluntary supervisors and one full-time staff member, said Miss Robinson. The workshop had a roll of 41. During the year 19 new cases had been referred to it by various organisations and the workshop had found positions for seven trainees. The kitchen had been in use since March and a weekly cooking class had been held. Eventually all trainees would be taught to
cook. The workshop also ran classes in recorder, folkdancing and swimming. During the year contract work had been referred to the workshop from city firms. The patron (Mr G. Manning) said this was pleasing to see because it was some indication that the work was being done, not only for the sake of work but for utility as well. Members endorsed the need for the extension of this type of work, particularly (among those who were handi- ' capped in middle age, such as those in the 50 to 60 age
group who suffered from i strokes. Mr H. O’Reilly said there were a certain number of trainees who would never be placed in employment. As the years went by this number would increase and so the workshop would have to plan increased accommodation for permanents. He said at present the association depended only on the generosity of the donors. Officers elected were:— Patron, Mr G. Manning; president, Mr E. R. Clark; vicepresidents, Messrs M. A. Connelly, M. Cosgriff, H. O’Reilly, R. H. Truscott, Dr. W. M. Platts' Miss A. G. Harding; committee, Mesdames C. Barnes. C. S. Holland, Messrs A. B. Allen, D. Barrett, D. W. Lyall, A. H. Marker; treasurer, Mrs J. E. Wood; secretary, Miss C. E. Robinson; honorary auditor, Mr J. J. Cuddon; honorary solicitor, Mr I. Cottrell.
