BADMINTON BEGINS
24 Top N.Z. Players
Twenty-four top New Zealand men's and women's badminton players began the singles competitions on the first night of the Canterbury invitation tournament at Skellerup Hall last evening. The only top player absent was R. Purser (Taranaki), who is in England, but there were no Canterbury entries. None of the three top men’s players, J. Robson (Auckland), D. Higgins (Wellington) and K. Long (Auckland), were really extended although the two young play-; ers, 1. Clegg (Taranaki) and) G. Jefferson (Waikato),! played well against Robson and Long respectively. There was a high standard of play in the women's section although some players i concentrated on their over- : head shots too much. Mrs H.' Jlobson and Mrs V. Gow, both of Auckland, were the most impressive players. The singles matches have been divided into four sections of three players for both men and women. Players in each section play each other and the winners will contest the semi-finals today. Final singles, and men's and women’s and mixed doubles matches will be played today.
