N.Z. Meteorologist Gains World Body Post
Mr W. R. Dyer, the assistant director (services) of the New Zealand Meteorological Service, has been appointed to an important post in the World Meteorological Organisation at Geneva. He will become project manager at the global observational system survey! required for the W.M.O. con-! gress to be held in 1967. Mr Dyer is retiring from the department in New Zealand after more than 40. years’ service. He previously] had two years with the: W.M.O. as chief of technical! assistance. He also spent; several years in Samoa and, eight in Fiji. He was responsible for the establishment of full meteorological services in the Pacific; area. The global observational: system project has the backing of the General Assembly] of the United Nations, which,
specifically requested examination of the problem. The present project aims at a full survey of existing and foreseeable observational techniques leading towards the development of an integrated
system to meet world requirements. It will include surveys of present and new techniques, of new sensors and instrumentation and of new platform systems, including rockets and satellites. The survey will fill one important aspect in planning for the world weather watch, a far-reaching concept directed at a complete and co-ordinated programme for improving weather services on a global basis. ’All countries of the world are expected to benefit from it.
