Car Parking
Sir, —On Wednesday at 9.30 a.m. I parked outside a furnishing store between Colombo street and the Bridge of Remembrance. Spaces behind and in front were already occupied. Returning later I found a woman had parked a large car encroaching over two parking areas, the white line passing beneath her car. This “pirate” car parker, with trailer towbar barely 1} inches from my bumper bar, obviously could not have parked without bumping either car, thus completely hemmed in. This type of motorist bumps this way into car parks without a thought for damage to other people’s property, dishonestly getting away with it unless someone has witnessed such a happening, too lazy to find a parking space. What a pity there was not a traffic officer in the vicinity at the time. I have full particulars of the offending car. Would the traffic department advise what is the ruling in this case? — Yours, etc., CONSIDERATE MOTORIST. May 28, 1965. [The traffic superintendent of the Christchurch City Council (Mr J. F. Thomas) replies: “Under the parking meter by-law it is an offence for a motorist to leave his vehicle encroaching over two meter bays. As the correspondent has full particulars of the incident, might I suggest he convey this information to this department so that we may investigate the matter further?”]
