DETONATORS STOLEN
Police Warning To Public The Christchurch police have made an urgent request to the public to report to them immediately if they find or hear of a small red box containing 100 Nobel No. 6 electric detonators which was stolen from a Christchurch hardware shop on Thursday afternoon.
The police fear that the thief may throw the detonators away and that children who find them could be seriously injured or killed by playing with them. The police think that the detonators could have been stolen to blow open safes, or perhaps be in the hands of some unbalanced person intent on mischief.
At 3.40 p.m. on Thursday, the thief went to a counter in the Cashel street shop of Ashby Bergh and Company, Ltd., and asked for the detonators. He told the shop assistant he had an account. The box of detonators was brought from the magazine and put on the counter. The shop assistant’s attention was diverted by another customer, and the man took the detonators and left. Description of Man Detective-Sergeant D. C. Lee said that the man was aged between 22 and 25, with dark complexion, black hair brushed back, and clean shaven. He was about sft Bin, of slim build. He was wearing a well-cut, single breasted, dark suit with a prominent white fleck or check in it, and a white shirt and a tie.
Detective - Sergeant Lee urgently requested any person finding the detonators, or knowing where they are or the man described is, to get in touch with the police immediately. He also advised anyone who habitually has a substantial sum of money in a relatively unsafe place to move it or take additional precautions.
