Concern At Delays In Sanction
(N.Z. Press Association) MASTERTON, June 3. The New Zealand Catchment Authorities’ Association is concerned over delays which occur when river control schemes, approved by the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council, have to be sanctioned by the Government. This view, brought forward as a remit from South Canterbury, was supported bydelegates to the Catchment Authorities Association’s annual conference. A South Canterbury catchment board member, Mr A. C. Shaw, said there appeared to
■ be no justification for schemes of £50.000 and over having to be submitted to the Treasury and the Cabinet when the council had been given a certain allocation to work within, and should be permitted to manage its own affairs. He said in August, 1964, his board had submitted a scheme to the council. He thought it was placed in the Treasury’s hands in October but nothing further had been heard of it. It was more economic to put a scheme into operation without delay than to put it into cold storage, Mr Shaw said.
