MEN’S BASKETBALL 3 Invited To Play For Canterbury
Three of the South Island's most outstanding players, D. Charlett (Nelson), L. Pearson and D. i Sharp, both of Otago, may wear the unfamiliar red uniform of Canter- | bury at least once before the season is completed. An unanimous decision to invite the three players to supplement the Canterbury team to meet Queensland in j Cowles Stadium on August 4 was made at last evening's i meeting of the CanterburyMen's Basketball Association.
I It was felt the representative Canterbury teain wou.d not be strong enough to match the tourists and a (Canterbury invitation side, as (suggested by the New Zea- | land association, would be preferable. ! Charlett. who is regarded , as one of the best forwards >!in the Dominion, was un•j lucky to be left out of the , New Zealand training squad, i Pearson, another nationally ; ranked player, scored 21 points against Canterbury . less than a fortnight ago and was instrumental in Otago {gaining a comfortable victory. He was also a surprise {omission from the national 'training squad. Sharp, who has represented New Zealand Universities regularly, is the only member of the trio in the New (Zealand squad. He spent a season in Christchurch two years ago and was then chosen to represent Canter- { bury. He has also played for {Southland. Junior League [ The secretary (Mr A. W. ‘ Barrett) reported that the Canterbury junior basketball league would be starting on June 18 in King Edward Barracks. Once again it would be organised by Messrs M. A. McDougall and P. Dooguc, president of the New Zealand referees’ association and chief Canterbury coach, respectively. j Mr Barrett was appointed tournament controller for the South Island championship, to be held in Christchurch on July 8 and 9. The resignation of Mr W. E. Smith from the executive was received with regret.
