Application By Ryan Bros. The No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority. Mr J. S. Haywood, yesterday granted in part an application by John and Bernard Ryan trading as Ryan Bros., (Mr J. A. Bretherton), for an amendment to a continuous goods service licence. The applicants sought authority for an additional vehicle authority to carry their own heavy contracting machinery and plant for their own contracts with exemption from rail restriction throughout New Zealand. This was granted, but only for the Nos. 8 and 9 transport districts. The second part of the application which asked permission to transport heavy equipment for other contractors in the South Island with exemption from rail restriction was dismissed. This was opposed by Thomas Patrick Gilroy (Mr B. S. McLaughlin) for T. P. Gilroy, Ltd., who said his company had owned two vehicle authorities for heavy transport throughout the South Island. His company specialised in moving heavy machinery and equipment but over recent years the work offering had been spasmodic and not sufficient to keep all his units constantly in work. The business had been affected by contractors who normally used his service obtaining their own authorities, said Mr Gilroy.
