Lake Ellesmere
Sir, —As one of the thousands of nature-lovers and sportsmen who regularly find enjoyment in that area, I would like to say “hands ofl; Lake Ellesmere” to the Canterbury Progress League This lake, which supports the largest population of water birds and fish in New Zealand, could be called “the working man’s National Park” with its ease Of access to Christchurch. It has now been found in America that thousands of dollars have to be spent annually to provide artificial habitat for the wildlife after the drainage and reclamation of similar areas. Finally, if farm land is so urgently required, I would suggest the conversion into farms of all Canterbury golf links, racecourses, Hagley Parks, etc. Or would that idea be termed “not progressive?” —Yours, etc., STICK-IN-THE MUD.
