June 5 UNITED METHODIST FREE CHURCH. —A most successful meeting of in connection with the above body took place on Friday evening in Bennington’s Hall: the Rev. J. Tyennan in the chair. The meeting was addressed by Mr. Fisher, and several other members in connection with the Society. The following resolutions were passed.— ‘That it has become highly expedient that a place of worship, in connection with the United Methodist Free Churches, should be erected in Christchurch as soon as the necessary funds can be obtained." “That !t ls not desirable that we should commence the erection of such building until subscrip-
tions to the amount of one-half the probable cost of the building at least have been obtained.” “That the committee i eport to the quarterly meeting, and solicit its concurrence in the views expressed in these resolutions.” “That a subscription list be forthwith opened, and contributions solicited, under the direction of the committee.” The “West Coast Times” chronicled the first birth which has taken place at Hokitika, as “Mrs. T. M’Carthy, late of Picton, of a daughter” This honor of giving birth to the first child born of European parents on the West Coast is disputed, and is claimed by a Mrs. Smith, who was confined a week previously. .
