Change Of Venue

The trend for harrier races to be longer continues. The latest change is in the arrangements for this year’s annual Kennett Cup races. Riccarton racecourse has been the regular venue for these events since the first was held in 1930. Until now the senior and junior events have been contested over a little more than two circuits of the racecourse, a distance of about three miles and a quarter.

For this year’s meeting on June 12 both the distances and the venue have altered. The races—senior, junior, colts, and women—will be held at Queen Elizabeth Park, the former New Brighton racecourse. The senior event will provide greater spectator interest with the distance being almost doubled to six miles. The organiser, the Christchurch Harrier Club, plans to work in at least three laps of two miles but the laps may be shortened to require four circuits.
