Some Good Entertainment In "Miss N.Z.” Show
Crude “corn” and some of New Zealand’s most polished talent are in the ‘Miss New Zealand Contest Show," which had its first night in the Theatre Royal last night. The show will continue tonight and tomorrow night. “Miss New Zealand 1964,” Miss Lyndal Cruickshank, was there while 10 girls competed for the title she holds.
The girls were treated by the compere, lan Saxon, as considerably less intelligent than they appeared to be. Lou and Simon, the New Zealand singers, should stick to singifig and drop inane sexual innuendos from their act.
Peter Posa made a popular return to Christchurch and gave the audience a taste of both electric and acoustic guitars, the latter better.
Another crowd-pleaser was the country and Western singer, John Hore, who is becoming more at home on the stage. The last on stage was
Howard Morrison, another who needs to lift his commentary to a higher level. His very fine voice was heard to advantage in numbers such as “Exodus” and “Granada.” The backbone of the whole show was undoubtedly the Quin Tikis, a group which includes a drummer, Garry Wahrlich, who could stand alone as a comedian on any stage.
This group provided most of the really funny parts.
