PORTRAITS DAMAGED
Vandalism In Gallery
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, May 28.
Vandalism to art treasures at the National Gallery was reported to the board of trustees today. One object in the current Japanese exhibition was damaged, and three portraits, including one of the New Zealand Victoria Cross winner, Sergeant Pilot Ward, by Sir Oswald Birley, were damaged by a sharp instrument, said the secretary (Mr F. M. Bass). Previously uncovered, the portraits will now be glazed, making viewing more difficult.
Mr S. B. MacLennan, director of the gallery, said an other attendant would be employed for extra patrol duties.
