Tours Officer

Mr M. Foster, of Christchurch, has been appointed by the Automobile Association, Canterbury, to the newly-created postion of tours officer as from August 1. For the last 18 months Mr Foster has been the Christchurch representative of the Manufacturers’ and Retailers’ Acceptance Company, Ltd., which provides a finance service for A.A. members. One of Mr Foster’s principal tasks in his new position will be the publication of the annual A.A. South Island handbook This task falls on the A.A. after the merger of the South Island Motor Union into the New Zealand Automobile Association. Cool Weather The weather in Christchurch yesterday was overcast and cool. A few drops of rain fell in the middle of the afternoon, tut soon stopped. Temperatures recorded at the weather office at Harewood were 40 degrees at 9 a.m., 49 degrees at noon, with a maximum of 51 both there and at the Botanic Gardens at 4 p.m. The wind was a moderate northeasterly. There was no frost. Similar weather with perhaps more rain is expected today. Gift To Uganda Two book-ends and two letter racks, made of New Zealand native timbers and designed by the late Mr Mervyn Taylor, have been presented to the Parliament of Uganda by the New Zealand Government. The presentation was made at New Zealand House to the High Commissioner for Uganda (Mr Bazarrabusa) by the New Zealand High Commissioner (Sir Thomas Macdonald). The gift marks the attainment of independence by Uganda in 1962. The book-ends are of totara and kauri. A selection of New Zealand books completed the gift.—London, May 28. University Offices The remodelled administration block of the University of Canterbury will be occupied next week. An upper storey, sheathed in glass, has been added to the groundlevel extension of the registry, built in concrete masonry to match the older building’s stone. The accounts department will move into the top floor this weekend, the new public information office will open there later in the week, and then the academic records, general office, and counter staff will occupy the ground floor. All have been in temporary quarters during building.
