SURF BOARD RIDING
First Club In S.L Formed
The Sounth Island s first surf board riding club has been formed in Christchurch. Situated at Sumner, it i« named the Breakwater Surf Board Riding Club and derives its name from the breakwater at Scarborough. There are about six such clubs in the North Island and all are affiliated to the NewZealand association. The Breakwater club intends to follow suit.
The local club has been set up to control surf board riding in the Canterbury province and to help resolve any problems that may arise with bathers. It intends to hold dub cham pionships, the first probably in August or September, and from these championships to select a team to take part in the NewZealand championships, at NewPlymouth, at Labour week-end. The championships were to be held at Easter, but a lack of surt caused their postponement.
the club was formed from a public meeting this week and anticipates a membership of between 150 and 200 from al! over Canterbury. Officers elected at the inaugural meeting were:— President. Mr G. Broadbelt; vice-president, Mr D. Quane; secretary. Mr B. rulloch; treasurer. Mr N. Ferguson: club captain, Mr M. Craw; club instructor, Mr G. Finch: committee, Mies P. Nicholas, Messrs D. Poyner, J. Falkner, M. Roberts, I. Ellingford and B. Nute.
