3 GAMES 3 WINS
Exhibition Of Squash
The world amateur squash rackets champion, Aftab .lawaid, gave a brilliant exhibition of the game when he won three matches without leaving the court in Christchurch last night.
In the main game against the five times New Zealand champion, C. R. Waugh. Jawaid was fully extended, but against D W. Preston he had things very much his way. M. Garrett appeared a little overawed by the occasion and failed to do himself justice.
In the first game Waugh allowed Jawaid's speed of shot to force him into errors and added to this the champion played five perfect cross-court drives which died in the back corners. After the rest, Waugh came to life with two amazing high backhand volleys which found the nick.
Waugh went to a 6-4 lead and was unlucky to have an appeal for a let disallowed. This gave Jawaid his chance and he took three quick points before dropping the serve. Waugh failed to score and Jawaid found the nick with two drops to gain a two-game lead. At the start of the third game Waugh could do no wrong. ,His drops were perfection and his lobs forced the Pakietanian to boast defensively from the back court. Waugh took this game. 9-4. When Jawaid took the first three points of the final game, it was obvious that Waugh was tiring under the constant pressure of his speed and accuracy, but Jawaid strM had to play up to his best overseas form. He won, 9-1, 9-6, 4-9. 9-3.
