Periodic Revision Of Road Tax Urged

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, May 27.

The Industrial Transport Association will seek an undertaking from the Government that road-user taxation will be reduced from time to time in the light of the actual requirements of the National Roads Board.

The president, Mr D. E. Jackson, of Auckland, said today that the association had considered the board’s request for acquiescence in remitting the annual contribution of £1 million from the Consolidated Fund to the National Roads Fund. The association had agreed to the proposal on the understanding the Government acknowledged that the complete income of the National Roads

Board would be provided by the road-user.

It also wanted an assurance that no inroads would be made into the board’s funds for purposes other than reading. “In view of the indication that the board’s revenue has now overtaken its needs, we also want a Government undertaking that roading taxation will be reduced from time to time in tune with the board’s requirements.”
