HIGHWAY BLOCKED
Road Soaked With Petrol (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 27. The road over Saddle Hill, just outside the Dunedin boundary, was completely blocked to the public for three hours and a half today when it was drenched with petrol after a tanker towing a trailer had slid off the side of the road. Four fire units were called to the scene of the accident and remained there from 12.45 p.m. until 4.45 p.m. They spread the entire road with foam for about 300 yards. The driver of the tanker, Mr R. C. Craig, of Balclutha, was not injured. Traffic Diverted
The road blocks were set up at 1 p.m. and were not lifted until 4.30 p.m. Meanwhile the traffic was diverted up a by-pass over Saddle Hill.
The road blockage was caused by petrol having to be siphoned from the damaged tanker into another tanker further down the hill. Motor pumps could not be used as they would have caused a fire hazard.
